Nathan Katz: Annele Balthasar

I confess that my favorite among Gunnar Heinsohn's books has always been Die Vernichtung der Weisen Frauen, on the witch-hunts of the Renaissance, which he wrote together with Otto Steiger. It remains one of my regrets that the book has never been translated. I had Gunnar's book in mind last fall, when I translated from Alsatian into English and standard German the play by the Jewish-Alsatian poet Nathan Katz (1892-1981) S'Annele Balthasar, on the 1589 trial of a young peasant girl accused of witchcraft . I was in the middle of translating when Gunnar informed me of his illness. I sent him the finished translation in German and he appreciated it. He deemed it "liebevoll." We talked about it at some length when I last visited him in Gdansk in January, one month before his death. He was much interested in the original Alsatian language, and in its translation. There was a bold literary streak to Gunnar, not well known. As a young man, when Al de Grazia and I first knew him, he was, together with Chris Marx, an ardent fan of Arno Schmidt. I am bringing here Nathan Katz and my translation of his 1924 masterpiece, Annele Balthazar, to the English speaking public, wishing them godspeed!Anne-Marie de GraziaRead: Nathan Katz: Annele Balthasar (in English) also available in German (Deutsch).Nathan Katz by Henry Solveen

Hermann Burchard: The unknown and unknowable 365 AD comet impact

On 21 July AD 365 a quake of magnitude ∼ 8 struck near Crete. It destroyed every
city on the island, with widespread devastation in a large region from the Balkans to N
Africa, from the Nile to NE Libya. The extreme W Coast of Crete was lifted up by 10 m
& the quake generated a tsunami, that carried ships 3 km inland at Alexandria, Egypt.

Here, in this note we announce that a large cosmic object, a meteorite or asteroid,
impacted planet Earth on that day, most likely a comet.
Neanderthal News 2020 - Part VI: "Travel"

Researchers found that the Eurasian populations could trace some genetic material back to two different Neanderthal lineages: one represented by a Neanderthal whose remains were discovered in the Vindija cave in Croatia, and another represented by a Neanderthal whose remains were discovered in the Altai mountains. They also discovered that the modern-day populations they studied also share genetic deletions — areas of DNA that are missing — with both the Vindija and Altai Neanderthal lineages.
Go to article
Neanderthal News 2020 - Part V: Lifestyles

One day in 2011, undergraduate student Naomi Martisius was sorting through tiny bone remnants in the UC Davis paleoanthropology lab when she stumbled across a peculiar piece. The bone fragment, from a French archaeological site, turned out to be a part of an early specialized bone tool used by a Neandertal before the first modern humans appeared in Europe. Used to smooth tough animal hides, the tools were made about 50,000 years ago by Neandertals. The specialized tools are still used today, in similar form, to smooth and refine leather made into high-end purses and jackets.Go to articles

A hormone called progesterone is important for preparing the uterine lining for egg implantation and in maintaining the early stages of pregnancy. Almost one in three women with European descent inherited a genetic variant of the progesterone receptor called V660L from Neanderthals. According to a new study, its carriers have higher fertility, more siblings, fewer miscarriages, and less bleeding during early pregnancy.Go to articles
Neanderthal News 2020 - Part III: Health - theirs and ours

Scientists have claimed that a strand of DNA that triples the risk of developing severe Covid-19 was passed on from Neanderthals to modern humans. The genetic endowment, a legacy from more than 50,000 years ago, has left about 16% of Europeans and half of south Asians today carrying these genes. They also had heightened sensitivity to pain, could tolerate smoke emanations better than was thought, and would have found it easier to use a hammer than pick up a coin.Go to articles
The evidence for early presence of Neanderthals and earlier hominins on the Greek Aegean island of Naxos, as discovered on the land of Alfred de Grazia, shortly after his death... (See here)>>>Here, we detail evidence from excavations at the chert source of Stelida on what today is the island of Naxos in the middle of the Aegean Basin, where paleodosimetric dates suggest that hominins were present in the region by 200 ka ago, accessing the chert quarry during a glacial lowstand when exposed land connected Anatolia to continental Southeast Europe, by seafaring, or through some combination of the two. Throughout the remainder of the Pleistocene, this region was occupied and/or traversed at least sporadically, including by early H. sapiens ~40 to 30 ka ago (who may have arrived by boat), and later by indisputably seafaring Mesolithic hunter-gatherers of the Early Holocene...<<<Go to the article in AAAS Science Advance

Alfred de Grazia's seafaring Neanderthals of Stelida, Naxos

From Science to the American School of Classical Studies, to Archaeology News, to the SIS Review, the archaeological world is abuzz with the implications of the Palaeolithic discoveries at Stelida, on the island of Naxos, Greece. The presently held conceptions about the patterns of settlement of Europe by early Man and proto-humans may well have to be drastically revised. In Alfred de Grazia's garden was discovered the earliest evidence of a human presence in any island in the Mediterranean.Go to the article by Anne-Marie de Grazia with links to numerous articles in various languages.
Update: August 2021 - Arab Coinage Hiatus
Arabs (Nabataeans) are supposed to have forgotten the issuing of coins and the art of writing (Aramaic) after the 1st century AD and only learned it again in the 7th/8th century AD (Umayyad Muslims). This chronological assumption is contradicted by stratigraphy and art history. The first Islamic sacral buildings (Dome of the Rock; Al Aqsa) and administrative structures (Umayyad Palaces) are built in Jerusalem, which also becomes Islam's first Qibla (prayer direction). They stand hiatus-free directly upon ruins of AD 70, when Nabataeans, under the command of Rome's Titus, conquer the city. The first Islamic coins are also issued in Jerusalem. They continue 1st c. AD Nabataean designs. Symbolically, however, they become Jewish (Menorah) combined with Arabic lettering. All this happens in the Holy City because Islam emerges as a rescue operation for Judaism, which was eradicated in Jerusalem. Therefore, the Quran (5: 20/21) confirms what “Musa [Moses] said to his people: ‘O my people! Remember the favor of Allah to you, when He made prophets among you, made you kings, and gave you what He had not given to any other. […] Enter the holy land which Allah has assigned to you, and do not turn back and thus become losers’.” Stratigraphically, this occurs in the 8th century, because our global textbook chronology of the first millennium AD contains some 700 fictitious years.

A new theory to explain them

Wandering balls of light: earthquake lights in Alaska of a diameter of circa one meter (archival picture: 1972 or 1973)
Before the earth quakes, mysterious balls of light sometimes appear. Canadian scientists scrutinized this phenomenon of earthquake lights. Their explanations reach into the depths of the Earth’s crust.

Earthquake occasionally occur together with peculiar light phenomena - and may even announce themselves by way of such lights. In some cases, it appears that earthquake lights can appear weeks before any seismic shock, and at a distance of hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter, as Canadian geoscientists are now reporting in the magazine Seismological Research Letters. They are attempting to explain physically a phenomenon which has been controversial among scientists.

A team around Robert Thériault from the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Province of Québec has evaluated 65 cases of particularly well documented earthquake lights since the year 1600. Among them, there are four events which occurred in Germany: three of them go back to the middle of the 18th century in Karlsruhe, Aachen and Düren, the fourth case occurred in the late evening of November 16, 1911 near Ebingen, in the Swabian Jura.

A full 110 reports witness to the earthquake lights near Ebingen, some of them at a distance exceeding 100 kilometers from the epicenter of the 5.8 quake. Two eyewitnesses saw immediately prior to the quake a flash of lightning rise from the earth, which turned itself into a ball as it rose into the air and disappeared after a few seconds in the direction of Ebingen.

Fault lines can move electric charges along

Film records from Peru have also confirmed the mysterious phenomenon: when an earthquake of 8.0 intensity occurred in Pisco, a surveillance camera captured several flashes of light. Analysis later showed that the light phenomena coïncided with the seismic shocks. The 65 evaluated earthquakes ranged in force from 3.6 to 9.2.

The lights almost always appeared before or during the seismic shocks, only rarely afterwards. Particularly puzzling are the zones of the continental tectonic plates where the lights appeared most often: they happen mostly in areas in the middle of the plates - despite the fact that only around five percent of earthquakes occur there.

The researchers believe that deep lying, abrupt, vertical faults are an important prerequisite for the phenomenon of earthquake lights to occur. They were present in 97 percent of the evaluated events. Scientists surmise that, under extreme mechanical tension, an electric charge builds up and rises along these steep fissures all the way to the surface, where it charges molecules of air. In subduction zones, where the continental plates slide under each other, this does not happen, evidently due to the fact that the faults are not steep enough.

The lights remain a puzzle

At the occasion of the devastating earthquake which took place in 2009 in L’Aquila, in Italy, it seems that the lights even made it possible for one of the inhabitants to save his family. The man, according to report of the investigators, brought his family to safety outside the house after he had noticed the lights. "This is one of the rare confirmed reports in which earthquake lights have moved someone to proactive action," says Thériault. "Together with other clues evidencing change prior to seismic activity, earthquake lights could one day be helpful in predicting larger earthquakes."

Torsten Dahm, of the German Center for Geo Research in Potsdam (GFZ) judges this to be an interesting model for the phenomenon. Still, the presented explanation rests on a databse of a mere 65 earthquakes, most of which date back to the time before 1900 and are accordingly poorly documented. "Otherwise the database would be even smaller," says Dahm.

Moreover, the study is unable to explain why lights remain absent in most earthquakes. Such as on the occasion of later quakes in the Swabian Jura: in 1943 and 1978, two more quakes rattled the area, of an intensity similar to that of the Ebingen quake of 1911. No light phenomena were reported on these occasions.

Translated by Anne-Marie de Grazia
Original article appeared in Der Spiegel on January 6th, 2014

Sergey Pulinets: New Article Ionospheric Precursors of Earthquakes

Sergey Pulinets (at the Great Wall of China): We live in an electrical environment. We never think about this, but when you're standing here, it is a vertical electric field which has a gradient of 100 to 150 volts per meter. So, between the top of your head and your legs, you have a potential difference of 220 volts, like a power source...

A new scientific article on an electrical phenomena related to earthquakes, more precisely on Ionospheric Precursors of Earthquakes, by Sergey Pulinets and Dmitry Davidenko, has appeared on January 4th, 2014. Though it is highly technical, we are glad to bring it to the attention of our readers.
Go to the article in pdf

You may also want to reread his interview, below.
Sergey Pulinets is the head of the Moscow Center of Ionosphere Monitoring at Fiodorov Institute of Applied Geophysics, in Moscow, Russia. He is also Principal Researcher at the Space Research Institute in Moscow. Sergey is a world expert on earthquake forecasting through the monitoring of ionospheric precursors.

Did we sacrifice to the gods, or did we deify the sacrificed?

Humans and animals who were robbed of their lives in blood rituals as impersonators of godly beings - as representations of something still that remains to be defined - confront the science of religion with its most vexing challenges. Because in the great rituals of the Bronze Age such beings are ritually put to death, rather then being themselves the recipients of sacrifices, our understanding of the gods becomes ever more blurred. (...)

The author feels himself committed, in his approach to sacrifice, to a decidedly conservative attitude. The retrospectively breathtaking audacity with which scholars, since the assertion of evolutionism, have stopped evaluating the subject matter of religious sacrifice, and have instead subjected them to their own bureaucratic principles, in order to then evacuate all the findings which did not match their expectations, this audacity the author could never make his own. The massive indications of overwhelming natural catastrophes which are so clearly to be seen in geological and archaeological layers (albeit only investigated in recent times), as well as in the written documents of the early high cultures, were packed into implausible constructs, turned into enigmas and allegories, ignored, ridiculed or at best - since the beginning of the 20th century - psychoanalyzed as the discharge of confused souls.

In the course of this book we will show that the soft evolutionism of the Lyell-Darwin school has succeeded in blocking scientific research and reflection in its depth for now well over a century and a half. In the 800-page final version of van der Leeuws Phenomenology of Religion (1956), which had its last edition in 1970, the terms “catastrophe,” or “cataclysm” simply do not occur at all. In this work, religious-historical Darwinism attained its summit. Practically everything which was fundamental for the understanding of ancient religions was passed over without a word.

The elucidation of myth, ritual and religion must now begin almost anew. For this we will need to take seriously once more especially the most shocking contents of the early religious texts. We will be holding them up therefore next to the no less catastrophically stamped finds of archaeology and estimate them anew in the light of the latter. It is well known that one advances often with the solution of an enigma - in this case, the sacrifice of celestial deities - only when one addresses it together with other enigmas from adjacent fields - in this case the geological and archaeological destruction layers, as well as the myths of cosmic revolutions of the ancient peoples.

Historial Evidence Without Archaeology: Jan Beaufort answers Trevor Palmer

The present paper responds to Trevor Palmer's critique of a “re-writing” of the chronology of the first millennium AD. (...) I argue that the supposed consistency of
the primary sources is in fact an illusion produced by secondary literature. I prove this argument with Palmer's key witness against Heinsohn, the ancient historian Herodian. Go to article

The reasons I had for writing this article are summarized on pages 4-5 of the e-book. I just try to ensure that as much relevant evidence as possible is brought out into the open, in a fair way, to enable informed debates to take place about individual theories, and for supporters of particular theories to be able to address apparent problems (...).Go to the article

Gunnar Heinsohn: Arabs of the 8th century - cultural imitators or original creators?
Among Jewish acceptors of Muhammad, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai becomes significant for the chronology of Muhammad. During Imperial Antiquity (1st-3rd c.), Shimon was active after 70 CE (after the Roman destruction of Jerusalem’s Temple), i.e. during the 1st and 2nd century. He calls Muhammad "a prophet sent to Ishmael according to God's will", in other words, a representative of the God of the Jews for Arabs. Interestingly, however, the report on Rabbi Shimon's positive assessment of Muhammad comes from the Early Middle Ages (8th-10th c.) some 700 years later, precisely from the 8th century (Prawer/Ben-Shammai 1994, 304).Go to article

CE, the dramatic shift from the Early Middle Ages to the High Middle Ages.
Go to article

Bulgaria's early medieval capital of Pliska and Preslav: were they really built to resemble 700-year older Roman cities?

Bulgaria’s urban explosion during the Early Middle Ages, which matches the scope of city building in Rome’s imperial period some 700 years earlier, takes the excavators by surprise because even Constantinople cannot not show any new building between 600 and 800 CE. Actually “nothing is known about Byzantine cities from the 7th to the 9th c. CE“ (Kirilov 2006, 181). Whilst the most powerful empire of the Early Middle Ages lacks any urban ambition, the Bulgarian newcomers boldly recreate huge Roman urban ensembles whilst the rest of Europe appears to haven fallen asleep in a dark age. It is this absolutely extraordinary, even ravenous, urban appetite of former steppe dwellers that makes the Bulgarians sensational and unique all over Europe.

Go to article
Sarmatians, Huns and Khazars: were they one and the same Confederation?

The origin of the 8th-10th c. Khazars is hidden in obscurity, though they are also called “Huns“ (by Theophanes the Confessor [758/60-817/818 CE] or by Moses of Kalankatuk [10th c.]). The ancestors of this ubiquituously tribute-collecting power are even believed to “have belonged to the empire of the Huns“ (JVB 2008), although they had to wait another mysterious 300 years before they could actually rule the Hunnic realm: “Very little [was known] about the Khazars – about their traditions, their funerary rites, their culture" until, in one of their fortresses, Atil, the excavators have found Hunnic-like “huts similar to yurts, which are characteristics of Khazar cities“ (Dmitry Vasilyev 2008).

Go to the article in pdf

The Winchester of Alfred the Great and the Haithabu of his voyager Wulfstan: were they separated by 700 years?

According to a report published together with Alfred the Great’s (871-899 CE) translation of Paulus Orosius’ (385-410 CE) Histories, Wulfstan, the Early Middle Ages‘ most famous ocean voyager, around 880 CE, went “from Haethum [Haithabu/Hedeby] to Truso in seven days and nights, and that the ship was running under sail all the way. Weonodland was on his right, and Langland, Laeland, Falster, and Sconey on his left, all which land is subject to Denmark.
